On March 22, 1948, Iowa State College (University) sponsored a 90th anniversary celebration in honor of the founding of the college, which occurred on the same date in 1858 when the charter act establishing a state agricultural college became law. Beatrice M. Bruner Dowd, a native of Rolfe, IA, received a B.A. (1941) in Mathematics from Iowa State College. In 1943, Dowd enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and was sent to the University of California at Los Angeles to attend Meteorological School. She worked as a Naval Weather Forecaster until her discharge in 1947. She then was employed by Sylvania (later GTE Government Systems) (1958-1986) as an electronics technician; Engineering Section Head; and Engineering Dept. Manager. ...
